Hugo Alfvén. Symfoni Nr. 2 i D-dur, Op. 11 (1898) (Symphony No. 2 in D major). Edition Wilhelm Hansen Copenhagen (World). Orchestration.
Although Alfvén rather disingenuously told the press that his new symphony was "about" the love of parent for child, and dedicated the premier to his adolescent daughter, Margita, the wordless soprano/tenor vocalise that twines in and out and round about the lush, at times even throbbing, orchestral sonorities made it perfectly clear to most listeners and critics, during the first performance
In this work Alfvén, like many other Scandinavian composers, found the typical Nordic tone of his music in the sunny south. Like Sibelius’ second symphony and Stenhammar’s Serenade for Orchestra, this symphony is Swedish through and through. Symphony No.2 in D major, Op.11 (Alfvén, Hugo) It is very unlikely that this work is public domain in the EU, or in any country where the copyright term is life-plus-70 years. However, it is in the public domain in Canada (where IMSLP is hosted) and other countries where the term is life-plus-50 years (such as China, Japan, Korea and many others worldwide). This highly regarded Symphony No. 1 exhibits very finely nuanced tone colours, and with it he immediately became known as a capable and experienced composer. Alfven composed Drapa, a monumental, magnificent, and festive work with the subtitle 'King Oscar II in memoriam', for a gala event at the Royal College of Music and conducted its premiere on 18 October 1908. 2007-02-27 · Nothing could be further from that sound world than Alfvén's Fifth Symphony which partakes of the cold and subtly menacing atmosphere of the North.

For someone who might be so unrecognized outside of Sweden, he composed a decent volume of work, at least 54 works with opus numbers, but apparently a total of 214 works. But Alfvén is also highly regarded as a symphonist and he claimed that his Symphony No. 1 was the first to be written 'in the Swedish language.' This attractively priced box brings together all of the symphonies, the three Swedish rhapsodies and other works – a large part of Alfvén's output for orchestra. Alfvén conducts Alfvén. Hugo Alfvén regarded his Symphony No 1 (1896) as the first 'written in the reflective of spoken Swedish evident from symphonies by Berwald and others.
Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960) composed five symphonies. Naxos already has released CDs of the earlier symphonies, with Niklas Willén conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (Nos. 1 and 3), the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (#2), and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (#4), and it is good to see them bringing the project back to Sweden with this CD. Järvi’s Alfvén series is now available in a highly-desirable money- and space-saving box which Rob Barnett reviewed in 2004 (see review). The symphony is in four movements with the slow movement placed second, thus following all its predecessors apart from the fourth which inverts the order of the central movements.
